I recently flew Thai Airways from BOM-BKK with a connection to SIN after that. The BOM-BKK flight was an A330-300. At the airport, we were told that many of the seats on the plane had issues: in some the entertainment system didn't work. In others, the tray did not work. In some the recline did not work. The agent estimated that 1/3rd of the seats had issues. I was first offered a seat where the entertainment system and tray did not work. The agent suggested that I eat in the lounge (I'm a Star Alliance Gold member due to my 1K status with United) before I get on the flight. Eventually I ended up getting a seat with no entertainment system.
I've flown Thai a few times in the past, and I've noticed that they consistently fly their older planes to certain destinations. Still, I'm aghast that the airline would fly a plane where so many seats had issues. They wouldn't dare flying it to developed countries. It's one thing for their entire fleet to be run-down, it's another when they reserve their worst planes to service certain countries. It shows a level of disdain that I've never experienced before as a very frequent traveler around the world. If you don't think a destination deserves a reasonably well-maintained plane, then don't serve that destination. Pull out and focus on your "premium" destinations.
