I've been watching baseball for a long, long time. I can't say that I've ever seen the Rangers 1-hit on opening day before, but I have seen them 1-hit and 2-hit and 3-hit a bunch of times, even when they had a very good team. Just because it's the first game doesn't make it any more important than the 83rd or the 110th game. It just sticks out more.
Let's look a little closer at what happened last night.
Sonny Gray is very well regarded pitcher. On any given day he has the ability to make another team look bad. Last night, he did make the Rangers look bad because he had pinpoint control. But he didn't make them look like idiots. This is a strikeout pitcher, but he only fanned three. Only 5% of his pitches last night went for swinging strikes, and it's not like he induced an impossible number of ground balls.
That's not as dominant as throwing a one-hitter would lead you to believe. The kid was good, certainly, but he had some luck along the way too. It wasn't want of those nights where the pitcher only allowed two or three hard hit balls. The Rangers hit some line drives and hit some balls deep into the outfield that died in the dead Oakland air.
Gallardo wasn't all that sharp, but all things considered he limited the damage after the two-run homer.
Neither Klein nor Mendez pitched well and that's disconcerting but it's not the end of the world.
It's only one game. That's all it is. And yet I'm hearing panic from everyone from fans to journalists. 2014 was a bad year but it's over. This is a new season, so get a grip and realize that not every loss is a harbinger of doom. The Rangers are going to lose a lot of games this year and they're going to lose them in all sorts of ways. But they're also going to win a lot. Relax and enjoy it.
