Its time for us to realize that we're not going to the playoffs no matter what, not even with TJ Yates. And if we aren't going to sign Kaepernick or RG3 then we need to at least be auditioning a young qb that has the same style of play as DW4 so you don't have to completely change your entire offensive scheme in the event of another injury. NONE of these QB's currently on the roster will be here next year so why not tryout a young guy for now? My top candidates are as follows:
Trevone Boykin, Phillip Walker, Trevor Knight, Jerod Evans, ** Greg Ward Jr.
Boykin most likely wont happen as he's had his share of legal problems and Robert runs a strict PRISON but boy is he dynamic and would be an ideal backup for DW4.
Phillip Walker led Temple to double digit wins last year and although he's fairly inaccurate (58% completion rating) he's still more accurate than Tom Savage with Russell Wilson type mobility. I liked what I saw on his highlights but need to watch more film b4 I'm fully sold.
Trevor Knight has wheels! Simple, the guy can fly (4.5 second 40yd dash, laser time not hand timed). Finished his career at aTm where he proved he was a true dual threat qb. Completion rating leaves much to be desired (53%) but in the scheme we have DW4 running I can only imagine that number would go up a bit with O'brien.
Jerod Evans left school 1 year too early and never gave scouts enough tape to be drafted however, he's a big guy with a big arm. And like the rest of the QB's on this list he's very mobile, evidenced by his 842 rushing yards last season. Ran a slow 40 (4.8) but looks faster on tape and isnt afraid of contact. He's worth at least thinking about.
**If you live in Houston you probably know all about Greg Ward Jr. He took on some of the best teams in college football and shredded them repeatedly. The guy is a great leader, super athletic, and a great on field decison maker. I totally believe he could run this new system of Bill O'Briens despite not having the cannon arm of Savage or DW4.
These are all practice squad players that we can pick up TODAY on cheap rookie salaries. Who do you all think would be worth the 7 game investment to find our future backup qb?
