Potential dumb question about sentry vs camera based detection

I have sentry mode OFF but camera based detection ON. Does this even do anything or will I not receive any sort of notifications about motion/detection around my vehicle. Does sentry mode need to be ON for it to work? What exactly is the difference? Sorry if this is a dumb question.
