Hello everyone, I’m new to the sub and the hobby. I’ve been a miniature painter for many years but only recently have I dared to try my hand at building some terrain. I’m both very excited and yet very intimidated by the challenge of crafting terrain. I’ve never made any terrain before and I’ll be making my first attempt at the beginning of next month. I’m currently watching YouTube vids and reading guides on how to build war gaming terrain, and while I’m learning quite a bit about terrain building, I thought I should reach out to the community and learn from you guys as well. My upcoming project is an alien desert terrain, inspired by the Nekroplanet Grob- https://gardensofhecate.com/projects-gallery/miniature/nekroplanet-grob-scenic
I want to start out with something relatively small, so I’m thinking of working with a 6x6 base and using some mold a scene plaster from woodland scenics with a little foam board to build up small hills and rocks and apply some fire land terrain from AK. I have a few pieces of resin scenery that I will be adding on as well. As far as what the base will be, I know that foam board or hydrocal casts are commonly used, but I was thinking about using a simple 6x6 sheet of acrylic. What do you guys think? Would the mold-a-scene have any trouble adhering to the acrylic sheet? Is there something better I should use? Am I just going about all of this the stupid way? And do you guys have any general tips or suggestions for a newcomer as far as tools, materials, and techniques?
Any and all help is appreciated!
