New resident - Vehicle registration?
Post Body

Hello, everyone! I’m moving out of state and to Tennessee for the first time and am uncertain about how switching a vehicle registration works, so I’d love some help.

I’m planning on living in TN for at least 2 years — do I even need to get a TN registration? The car is currently registered in the state of New York, my dad’s name is on the title, and my dad makes the payments. He’s given me permission to take and use the car while in TN.

Would he need to transfer the title into my name in order for me to be able to get TN plates? Or would I need to register it in his name in the state of TN, even though he does not have an address in the state? Would there be an issue with payments being made in NY for a car located in TN?

I know nothing about cars and any advice would be appreciated, thank you! :)
