I'm trying to transcribe the Quenya letter names from Appendix E, and I'm wondering how to write the words that were affected by sound shifts:

thúle -> súle

harma (pronounced kharma?) -> harma (with breath h)

ngoldo -> noldo

ngwalme -> nwalme

wilya -> vilya

áze -> áre

Would the letter sounds have changed along with the words, so that the spelling stayed the same? Tolkien gave the post-shift sounds of harma and áze (as aha and esse) and the new sound doesn't match the new word, so I'm guessing the spelling for those changed, at least. But I'm not sure about the rest.

If the letter sound changed so that eg noldo and númen both have the N sound, can those letters be used interchangeably like silme/silme nuquerna?

Do we know when these sound shifts would have happened? Would a Quenya speaker in Beleriand still be saying ngwalme and wilya?
