I live in Edmonton Canada. So I am renting a one bedroom apartment with open kitchen and living room together. I have a one year old. During the extreme cold last week our upstairs neighbour heater stoped working. So since it was an emergency we completely understood and allowed maintenance to come into our appart without notice. They drilled big holes in the ceiling to access the heater pipes which were frozen. Me my wife and kid were all present in the house and there were drywall dust everywhere while they were working and even after they left. Now for the past week there has been a huge hole in my ceiling ( luckily it didn’t affect my room temperature that much) . They just picked up the big piece of dry wall. Gave the floor a wacky sweep 🧹. That’s it!!!. I took me hours to vacuum the dust in the entire kitchen and living room.
I emailed the management to ask the contractor to seal the living room using the Zipwall dust barrier system in order to create a safe space for tenants who have nowhere to go and have to stay in the apartment.
We received an notice of entry today and they just seem to have ignored the fact that the drywall dust is going to be everywhere and cannot live in the space Especially With my one year old. The work is going to last 5 days. Is this legal to ask us to stay in the apartment while there is major construction work. What are my rights as a tenants. I DO NOT HAVE tenant insurance. I just can’t afford one ☝🏽
