What is this purple discolouration on my gums?

Hi, as I was brushing my teeth this morning I noticed my gums were hurting. I took a closer look at the spot it was hurting and this is what it looks like. It turned purple and it looks like that purple part chewed up a part of my gum. Should I be worried or will it go away on its own? Thanks!
