Im still fuming from yesterday so I’m going to vent and look for insight or input. I work in a very male dominated field and honestly have felt very accepted and also have been congratulated for my position, not because of my gender but because of my age. I’m never felt ostracized or looked down upon in over a year as a First Officer on a yacht. That was until yesterday when an old and crusty harbor master in Nassau required my yacht to be towed in while I was watching bigger ships go under their own power. Made radio contact with him, heard that I was a girl and requested to board. Once on deck the first thing he said was “where’s the OIC (Officer In Charge) which I replied it was me, he literally laughed in my face and said he was going to have us towed in. I have the same training and certification as any Captain/First Officer on a ship (up to 80 meters) that he meets but because I’m a young girl I obviously can’t do my job. I’m fuming still and it’s been over 12 hours. My Captain did chew his ass and told him “she can handle any yacht, in any condition and for him to stick with his little tugboat in safe harbors” which made me smile.
