Another thing I didn’t see mentioned: Nelson will be screwed over two ways financially. Independent contractors only have the option of purchasing a Marketplace plan via government website. Nelson (and others) often choose to go without since the government plans are always more expensive and have higher deductibles, but without having any coverage he also will be billed larger charges for the same procedures than others with insurance, since he will not get any in-network write-offs. For example, I needed a ct to check my kidneys. I was at a hospital that did not accept my insurance and if I had let them do it I would’ve paid $10k out of pocket. I went in-network and they were only allowed to bill me for 5k, wrote-off 5k, and insurance paid 4k, leaving me the remaining 1k. Nelson is likely FUCKED.
