S2E8 - Silly question: What's going on with this sink?

What is happening on the right side of the sink? Both the smaller sink area and the grooves set into the counter. Are the grooves to drain water from washed dishes? What's the little sink for?
Has anyone seen something like this in real life? I googled to see if I could find something similar but couldn't.
