I personally find Nate's character development amazing. His whole life he's been underestimated, left behind, and looked over and doesn't know how to handle being liked but not being consistently loved. He never communicated his true feelings before they bubbled over because he has lived his entire life holding back and keeping his mouth closed. I'm 100% not saying that he didn't do everything wrong but I think that he has the best development, even if it's negatively.

When he talks to Ted at the end of season 2, he doesn't know that Ted has his picture in his apartment next to a picture of his son, he just assumed that because it's not in a place to be shown off that Ted discarded it. He sees love and affection as something that can only be shown and not felt. What is interesting to me is that his mom shows him the love that he never got from his dad but his dad's lack of love towards him makes him seek out a father-adjacent figure in someone else. The second that someone begins to make him feel the way his father makes him feel, he acts out. He can't do this at home without losing his family but he can at work. He's got this newfound confidence in himself that he can channel from time to time and uses it to do all the petty things he has wanted to do since he was a child.

Nate is what happens when a child is forgotten. They cling on to the person who actively and constantly shows their admiration for them, whether fake or real. They don't care if it's genuine, they just need the feeling of someone caring for the things they say and they can run with it. Nate has now become Ruperts New Rebecca and is being used because Rupert can see that the hate that's in Nate's heart blinds him to the manipulation.

He's going to fall really really hard and I just want to see if Ted will help pick up the pieces or if it will go so far that Ted no longer even wants to help.
