Hi all- I'm new here, but excited to get started! I have a TV with 5000 lb towing/600lb TW capacity, and I'm trying to figure out specs for my first TD build. I observed each state seems to have different limits on what trailers require licensing and brakes. My TV recommends the trailer has brakes if >2000 lbs. My state requires licensing if trailer GW >3000 lbs.
I'm limited to trailer body width of 77" max, so I wouldn't need towing mirrors. Finished height without anything on the roof rack must fit into a standard 7' tall garage opening. I'd hope to use this trailer year round and it would be garage-kept, because of the amount of snow and ice i see in the upper midwest.
I was looking at 6x12 trailers- specifically the karavan sold at HD, but it comes with much more than the frame. I don't want the 400 lbs of decking or all of the metal sides and ramp that would go unused. Somehow I doubt I could buy a stripped down model direct from the manufacturer. I noticed most make do with 8' or less in length. Aside from plywood/foam size, what other reasons is this? I also see most TDs aren't on 6'-wide trailers. Thoughts on my plan?
Full/queen bed, solar, 2 batteries, potty, rv stove (& oven?), kitchen sink, fresh water, exterior shower, roof rack, front mount bike rack, small tv, LED lighting,
I'm wracking my brain trying to come up with a materials list including costs and weights to determine if my goal is feasible or not. Ideally, I'd like to keep my build dry weight under 1650lbs- lower if feasible. Removing excess metal and wood decking from the 6x12 karavan, I figure I'd be starting around 350-400lbs. Am I stuck building a foamie? 😄
