Will applying to a summer school job help me get hired for a full time position?

The family member who I live with is pushing hard for me to apply for summer school jobs because (direct quote) “maybe schools want to do a test run with a candidate in the summer before the fall starts.” While this could be possible, I have never heard of it being the case. Has anyone had a summer school job turn into something full time?
