OSS Is a joke (in my district at least)

First year teacher. ISS in my opinion, works so much better than OSS. Every single student that has been sent to OSS because they said or did something horrible or inappropriate has told me that they do it on purpose sometimes just so that they can stay home and not come to school. Like to my face. My principal won't send kids to ISS for some reason, it's usually OSS.

Pros: student is not in the classroom causing disruptions Student is in a (mostly) supervised location Student is not allowed to be on their phone Student is not goofing off (Sometimes) the student will actually do work rather than just play video games all day

Cons: it costs school resources? (Can't really think of many cons)

Like I understand that OSS can be severe in a lot of districts, but the parents in mine just don't care. It is somewhat their fault that their child is a demon spawn, regardless of COVID. OSS can work wonders if the parents care and actually enforce rules, but otherwise it's just a free day off. I have a student who got a week of OSS and he keeps messaging my in class students during lunch about how he's done nothing this entire week. Like explain the "punishment" part. Parents who do hold their kids accountable will still be upset about an ISS and reprimand their kid for messing up.
