Just wondering your HONEST thoughts how well your ESL/EL/ELL (students whose 1st language isn't English) are learning in your class. This is for super vast majority of you who are teaching your content in English to students with limited English proficiency; NOT for anyone who is fortunate enough to be in a bilingual school.
How well do feel your ELs with no to little English proficiency understand your content? Do you really feel they are grasping your material, or just being passed along? How much time do you spend accommodating their work? Why type of support does the ESL/EL/ELL teacher give you? I would appreciate any all suggestions and answers about this.
For me personally, I think it's a "pie in the sky" approach to think that ELs with little to no English can understand just as well as their English-speaking counterparts. I think even the best accommodations cause them to lose so much education. I really do think the best way to teach them is to teach them in their native language when possible and to also provide them with English classes.
