Today, the Dean of Discipline stopped by my room for a 'chat'. He asked me if I'd ever called a non-binary student by their preferred name, implying that I'd be facing official disciplinary action if I had.
I answered honestly when I said 'no', but what he doesn't know is that I rarely call any student anything other than the silly pet names I have for each class. I'm so disgusted by the intolerant attitude at the school where I teach and am so, so close to resigning over it.
(For context, I teach at a K - 8 Catholic school and told the kid I was proud of them and grateful for their trust when they told me their preferred name and pronouns. I also checked with them to make sure that the silly pet names were okay - they said yes!)
