First year teacher here. My principal told the staff that we should absolutely not ask our kids for their pronouns this year because another city in the state is going through a lawsuit related to pronouns(?). I'm an ELA teacher and I ask my kids to write very personal stuff in the classroom, and I feel that by not respecting their identity at the outset of the year, I'm automatically shutting down potential for good writing and discussion.
I learned from the guidance counselor that this is NOT a district-wide policy, and that our principal was the only principal to give such a directive to his staff.
I don't want to rock the boat too much, but I also don't want to make the lives of my LGBTQ students worse. What do I do here?
