I made it a month as a brand new teacher.
I worked in a rural district that refused to follow most guidance on covid.
The governor asked schools to stay online until September 28th. Weāve been hybrid since August 28. 50 positive cases and hundreds of students quarantined. 2 positives and 6 quarantined throughout my small hybrid classes. No sign of shutting down. The community college next door went online after 1 case.
The super put out an email saying we are in the stateās āred zoneā and are projected to stay there. He has no intent to shut down school.
Local health department asked schools to stop extracurricular activities, postpone or cancel football games. A spokesman for the school board said they wonāt do that.
From day one admins were dodging the hard questions, like at what number of cases will we shut down. Colleagues told me they think covid is a global conspiracy and masks donāt work because they donāt block farts. One guy even told me I donāt have to wear a mask during an in person meeting with 30 teachers and no social distancing.
Unfortunately I had enough and told my principal I donāt want to work at a district that doesnāt follow state and local health guidelines. The first thing she says is āso youāre the one whose been calling the health department on me?ā I told them Iām sorry and I wish things could be different.
I feel like I walked away from my dream job, but I know it wasnāt right for me. I loved the job but cannot perform in that environment. Luckily I have some savings and am going to try to get back into wedding videography to pay the bills.
Anyway, sorry for the rant. I appreciate yāallās support.
