I was approached by my principal and asked about the possibility of leading a new behavior unit on campus. I'm just finishing my second year of teaching as a SPED teacher. I've mostly dealt with kids 3-5 but really I've had experience with K-5. I've had students with challenging behavior both years and I've come to notice (and apparently others too) that I have a knack for connecting with and working with these students.
I feel like I'm just starting to find a groove and my content-mastery definitely has a ways to go. But I'm also not one to back down from a challenge. I just want to really know what I may be getting myself into. This is a Tier 1 school (very low demographics) and I would be switching from Itinerant Support and some Resource Pull-outs to running my own unit. I know they want to keep the numbers pretty low (probably around 8) and I would have at least one para with me. They're also trying to determine if it would be k-2 or 3-5. Nothing against the littles, but I'd prefer 3-5 but that would also come with testing accountability.
Anybody with behavior unit experience care to chime in? I'm completely on the fence about this. I'm also considering going back to get a masters and further my career. I feel like the more opportunities I take to become a well-rounded teacher will benefit me in the future, but I don't want to jump in the deep end and find out I can't swim.
I feel weird about asking a bunch of strangers but everyone close to me recognizes that I would be good at it but still express a lot of apprehension to me. I'm not sure if there's something I don't know or if it's just because it's a very intimidating thought to many people.
Any advice is appreciated.
