I have a co-worker who seems to think they are the savior of all kids. He is a newer teacher who is mainly pushing in or pulling kids out for interventions ,so he really has no idea what it’s like to be responsible for the learning of 30 kids at one time. I think it’s easier to be “good cop” when you’re in that position. You get to see kids in a much more relaxed/ comfortable setting. A traditional classroom needs more structure. And of course, teenagers generally hate rules.
While I appreciate teachers trying to create a safe space for kids to talk about their feelings, we shouldn’t be enabling them to disrespect other teachers just to “validate” their feelings. In the name of advocacy, this teacher messaged me the day after a behavioral incident to tell me that I “caused problems” for a kid at home by contacting parents and that now they would get their phone taken away 🙃 boo hoo. I’ve tried different approaches to redirect this student but none of them worked. I did what I could to restore the relationship, but it all failed. I was only met with disrespect. But now that I’ve reached out to parents, I’m the bad guy? Because you’re finally seeing consequences for your behavior? There have been other situations like this. Pretty much anytime we try to hold the line with a kid, he jumps in to defend them. I’m really over it.
