I (M40) (California) recently went back to school to finish my bachelors — I’m almost done. I’ve always had a passion for young people. I coach youth basketball and I also used to work at a nonprofit helping at-risk youth. Ive seen lives impacted in a positive way.
I’ve recently considered teaching high school. Buy everyone I’ve talked to has said, “DONT DO IT!”. Plus, most stories I read on this sub are horror stories about how bad the kids are, specifically post-Covid.
The optimist in me thinks I can make a difference in some kids’ lives. The realist in me says to stay the hell away.
Some factors I’m considering are: the stress, the pay, the parents, the kids (and their attitudes, phones, etc).
What would (current and former) teachers tell someone considering getting into teaching? Run away or give it a try?
