I work in a suburban, wealthy high school.
Today in one of my classes, before the bell rang to start class, two sophomore boys were talking loudly and one dropped the f-bomb. I was standing right there, and I turned and said, "Language!"
The boy looked at me blankly and asked, "What did I say?"
I said, "I don't think I need to explain it to you."
Another boy said, "Actually, those words are used so often now they don't really register anymore."
Okay, and?? That's not a good thing, my guy.
This is not the first time this has happened in almost 25 years at this school, nor is it the first time this year, but I am seldom met with such an "explanation" about it. I really think they all think they're still on Zoom, on mute.
I flaired this as humor because, one, there's no "WTF" flair, and, two, it's either laugh or cry sometimes.
Sadly, they have a point. It used to be unheard of to hear that kind of language, but now you can hear it just out and about. It's appalling what's accepted in casual society, and I don't even think I'm that much of a prude. There's a time and a place for everything. Heck, when I was in school not that long ago, you couldn't even say something "sucks" in school. I remember a science teacher who would always say "you mean creates a negative pressure gradient?" when they overheard the word.
Ugh. Now I feel old. Get off my lawn. 😔
