I've been re-listening to Evermore and Coney Island suddenly had a different meaning to me that made me so overwhelmed I wanted to share it with other Swifties to see what everyone thinks. It's kind of a dark interpretation, so I want to add a trigger warning about suicide before I go on.
I was thinking about Taylor's lines as the person who is left behind in a relationship by someone who was suicidal, and Matt's lines as the person who took their life and feels sorry for it from the other side. It kind of lines up with Renegade a bit and it just made me feel so touched/sad.
I know that this is likely not the interpretation they were going for, but it's been a hard year for a lot of us and I think this is really beautiful.
"And if this is the long haul, how'd we get here so soon? Did I close my fist around something delicate? Did I shatter you?"
"Were you standing in the hallway with a big cake? Happy Birthday, did I paint your bluest skies the darkest gray a universe away?"
