So, I plan on making a nice gift, but I really don’t want to give my special someone a mummified hollow animal, I would love to be able to give him an organ.
But, as we all know, organs tend to decompose from the inside and become slimy oozing biohazards quite soon, I have been doing some research and I’m aware of the several alternative preservation methods that exist to preserve them but I would love some help from you, please correct me if I’m wrong in any of my assumptions and if my imagination is going too wild, and if you have a better idea or another method I didn’t mention here, let me know.
First, I would live to preserve a hollow organ for practical purposes, my list of preferred hollow organs is:
-Heart
-Gallbladder
(I really don't want to see the ingesta)
Which organ do you think would suit my resources and conditions?
If you have a good preservation method for solid organs please let me know.
Second, I would like to use pig organs since they are the closest-to-a-human cheapest option available and I like pigs, should I consider working with any other animal? Do you think bigger or smaller organs would be easier to handle? Are there any factors I should take into consideration other than the price and availability?
Third, I have between 1.5 to 3 months to finish it.
As for instruments and space, I have a 12x12 ft open space to work in and an 8x8 ft indoor space. As well as the possibility of using a small biology lab once or twice if extremely necessary.
There are available to me:
- Scales.
- Precision scales up to .000
- Any sort of syringe and needle
- Your average dissection instruments (scalpels, etc).
- Compressor.
- Containers of all sizes.
- Freezer
And as for materials, these are the ones available to me:
- Formalin
- Isopropyl/Ethylic alcohol
- Epoxy (and I could consider buying any other plastic resin, rubber, or varnish).
- Expansive foam
- Acetone
- Medical grade disinfectants.
- Wires
Now, These are the problems I have with each preservation method I’ve been researching on, can I prevent any of this from happening? Can I replace any of the materials and instruments I don’t have with some I do or I could buy? Is there any logistical problem I haven’t seen?
Formaldehyde preservation- I think this method is too low effort for a gift and would be just not very cool to keep them in a jar floating, but if that's all I can do, it's just fine.
Air-drying preservation- this one seems to be the best one for me considering I have a compressor but how do you prevent the organ from exploding? It just doesn’t make much sense to me, am I missing something? I don’t want to have gallbladder shake all over my walls and face.
Plastination- I don’t have a forced-impregnation vacuum.
Please enlighten me.
