Tattoo help

I’m working with an artist trying to my first piece. I wanted to incorporate my buddies logo who has passed away along with some filigree around it. I have attached some reference photos. I don’t like the initial design as I feel the filigree is too thick and does not flow enough. What can he do to make it better?
