How do I call out if I can't physically speak?

Sorry if this is out of place for the subreddit, but I was recently hired as a seasonal cashier. I am currently in the hospital for an extreme infection of the throat, mouth, and lips which has essentially ended my ability to speak for some time. Would I have to have my doctor call? I think I remember being told by my LOD that I must call the store and ask for a LOD when I call out, and that I must be the person to make the call. This all happened very fast and the last thing I want to do is screw over my team members.
