How could the MBT-70 stand up to the T-64s and T-72s during the cold war?

The only advantage the MBT-70 would have is during side engagement as it could not penetrate or struggle to penetrate the frontal armour unlike the T-Series tanks who could penetrate the MBT-70 at any range. If it was built to face T-55s and T-62s that is more understandable, but not a long term solution. What was America thinking?
