One More Hour: is it about the wedding?
Post Body

Just a moment

Right before all the singing ends

Wasn't brave enough to tell you

That there ain't gonna be another chance

Before the singing ends... perhaps there was a band at the wedding? Like in the Lost In Yesterday music video? An hour before the wedding ends, or maybe before it begins?

I did it for love (All that I have)

I did it for fun (One more hour)

Couldn't get enough (All that I have)

I did it for fame (One more hour)

What is "it", what did he do? It seems like he's referring to music, everything, his whole life's work, but the unspoken question he is answering is "why did I do it?" The drums are so powerful here: he's putting it all out. These are the big things, the motives, everything, it's all coming out. One of the reviews I read used the word "sneering" to describe his tone here: like yeah, yeah I did it for fame, I did it to prove everyone wrong, fuck you if you don't like that.

And now the shift:

But never for money

Not for houses, not for her

Not for my future children

Until now

Now. Now is the wedding. Now everything is different. Kevin is coming to terms with the idea that he isn't on his own anymore. Kevin's references to money (in On Track) and houses (Instant Destiny) and children are new to the discography. Now he has to think of Sophie also. And kids!

The tapping on the piano at this point is so stressful. It is literally like tapping your fingers on a table. And he lets it breathe, and breathe, it just keeps going. Think about the time passing here. Think about the inner turmoil. It just keep going.

Kevin tunes out of the moment and retreats into his head. He asks:

How could I love again?

How could I ever ask for more?

Here he is at his wedding, and still he is full of self-doubt. How could there ever be a better lover out there?, he seems to be asking. Could there really possibly be more than this?

And to the road ahead // Into a life I can't ignore // (Lose her) How could I love again? // (Move her) How can I love this path for sure?

It is not clear what he is asking here but the next lines will clarify it: he is asking if he can create a new identity as a couple with Sophie.

(Lose her) With no more time to spare

(Move her) I know the answer more and more

And the answer:

As long as I can, long as I can

Spend some time alone

As long as I can, long as I can

Be the man I am

There it is: after everything, he is still an introvert at the very core. He still needs time to be alone.

I don't have any explanation for the bridge: just random thoughts I think. One more hour in the wedding.

The chorus repeats itself as the lyrics sinks in, he needs time to be alone, and everything becomes more uplifting as Kevin is delivered from his turmoil--but not completely. Feel the synths here, they are truly so sad even if there is a hopeful note.

The outro:

Just a minute, batter up before you go out there

All your voices said you wouldn't last a minute

babe One more hour and you know your life is one to share

Just a minute, baby, right before we go through here

All these people said we wouldn't last a minute, dear

I'm with you and I can roll into another year

I moved the "babe" to the third line, editing the Genius lyrics, because I feel that the way to understand this verse is as a shift from "you" to "we". In the first two lines, he is talking to himself in his head: in the next, he addresses Sophie; and in the fourth and fifth, it is the two of them together as "we".

The outro is bittersweet: you can feel it in the descending chords from 5:30-6:30, right until the guitar kicks in. Perhaps someone with more musical training can explain what is going on here: the chords feel minor or otherwise dissonant. It's almost as if he is mourning his old identity.

The last 43 seconds can only be described as cosmic. The guitar kicks in with a piercing scream and the base roars in. But all too soon it fades, it fades away and it's all over. One more hour.

One more hour.

Not until the end. But until the beginning.
