What are these rectangles!?

Does anyone know what those series of rectangles are on the property north of Buck Lake road just before you get to Chaires Cross road?
Every time I drive by they catch my eye. There are just off the road, in the trees, and they are clearly a series of man-made rectangular “pits” with raised dikes/berms between them.
They aren’t like any drainage retention area (DRA) I’ve ever seen - there are trees good sized pine trees growing in some of them.

there's still water buffalo in the area, but they're fenced in with some alpacas, cows, longhorns, and bisons. if you turn onto hill n dale you can usually see them :)
