My session today was difficult. I came into session saying I felt frustrated with the last session, that I needed more room for my experience and right now am not looking for advice or solutions. Just space and curiosity. I was particularly expecting these things as my therapist is person-centered/Rogerian. This would be an unreasonable expectation of a CBT therapist, since solutions are the name of the game here. My therapist started explaining why she was solutioneering and why she felt it was the best thing to do at the time. She also admitted that she felt she needed to be defensive. I think I made her frustrated and she could not put that aside to investigate my experience fully. She said she does not like being defensive and is not willing to do it. I wasn’t wanting to hear a defense or why she’s right. Especially if I’m “wrong”, it is her job to understand and validate my experience. Put simply, a strong transference/countertransference. What are your thoughts?
