I have had quite a few failed therapy attempts in my past, and I really want to make things different this time. Some of these attempts ended with the therapist saying we weren’t a good fit, some with me saying we weren’t a good fit, some just due to job change/moving. A few therapists have tried to give me referrals but the majority of time things just ended. Some provided referrals that were all dead ends. I expected more help with transitions I guess, but it doesn’t usually happen.
I’m embarrassed to admit I haven’t stuck with any one therapist for over a year since my early 20’s. I am constantly worried about having any kind of continuity of care if my current therapy were to end suddenly and my therapist didn’t care about finding me someone else to work with.
Is there any good way to cope with this? Do I just need to accept that I could lose my access to treatment at any moment and then take weeks, months, or years to get back to having the same working relationship with a new therapist?
