This happened maybe a two years ago but just remembered and thought i’d share.
Had a table of 5 women come in for brunch and the entire time was somewhat rude and dismissive towards me. Me being a fresh server, and dealing with post-pandemic attitudes/conditions, was not putting up with it and admittedly may have gave some attitude back.
Service was decent for the most part, besides the awkward start. Then, one party member, who told me she had to leave early and insisted on closing the the bill, while her friends continue with bottomless mimosas and hang out.
So i noticed everyone paid cash, which was common since I worked in a casino. I grabbed the check book and dropped it off with the bartenders, who had to cash me out. In that time, i continued to serve them even past the time limit on bottomless.
I don’t have an issue with people staying past the technical bottomless time limit, especially if it’s slow (no matter how crappy they may be), but i noticed she has left only around a 7% tip on around a $160 tab. Pretty much my tip out for my table.
That day, I was just feeling bold, even with the the cruddy start to the table. I always try to drop the change off even if they tell me to keep it since i believe consistent service even after the check is dropped. But after seeing that tip, I went extra with my service to the rest of the ladies.
I continued to take care of them. Talked and joked with them, which was much easier than speaking to the woman who practically made me pull out from my own wallet to tip out support staff on. Even stole some plates to give to a member of the table, simply since she joked she wanted them.
I brought back the check and cash, after it got cashed by the bartender, and the way i heard them just start talking about how there’s no way she just left that much.
I didn’t see the aftermath or if they talked to their friend but damn if it didn’t feel good to get that extra 25% on top of it.
By no means do i encourage my behavior. I was just petty and pissed their friend was rude
