At my FI, at least once or twice a month some gronked-out tweaker will come in with an out-of-state ID and I quickly discover that a fraud ring has been opening accounts and funneling money around, that someone in another branch ignored all the warning signs and opened an account for the fraudsters and now they're trying to cash checks at multiple different branches. It's extremely obvious for me to see the signs and I always catch every single one, but the issue is that no one else seems to take it as seriously as I do
I always immediately notify our fraud department and our supervisors, and am capable at expertly stalling and delaying these crooks with small talk, excuses, etc, all while making them think I'm going to disburse their cash "in just a couple of moments". I use the opportunity to notate their car's make and model, license plate, color photocopy of their ID, color photocopy of their checks, etc
However, our fraud department and our local management always end up telling me "wellll.... It does seem sketchy... I guess let them leave, or tell them the system is down". As soon as I break the news to them, they just flee the bank and head to a different branch. Judging by the group chat these fraudsters are allowed to galavant from branch to branch, the most they risk is just vaguely being denied service with excuses, until they finally hit up a branch where the employees aren't doing their job and end up cashing them out.
I see the aftermath of this in the area-wide group chat where branch managers are playing catch-up and trying to share camera footage of the perps, the area vice president is freaking out, people are running around with their hair on fire... ONCE I saw one of the branch managers ask if we could coordinate with law enforcement to get some of these guys detained, but there was no answer to his question.
At first I always asked if law enforcement had been contacted while I was stalling them but my team would just laugh at me. Later a coworker finally told me "oh yeah bro no one calls the cops anymore, maybe in the past but nah bro, not anymore- too much liability, and just let them go on their way, who cares as long as you're not the one that transacted for them haha"
What gets to me is that YouTube is full of recent bodycam footage of cops responding to a bank where an ID fraudster is being stalled by a teller, and then questioning and arresting the guy. Granted, the footage is only out of states like Florida, Minnesota, the East Coast, etc- and I'm in a West Coast state. The other thing that irks me is that this isn't just a one-off thing, these are clearly large, organized rings using druggies and homeless people as "runners", guiding them around through burner phones and ruining lives of hundreds of innocent people in Delaware, Florida, Texas, Maryland, Illinois, etc
I just want to query you guys and see how it is in your FI. If you have an ID fraudster, or a fraud ring trying to hit up your FI, does local management call law enforcement?
