Update at the bottom!
Well, I have one tonight. This is going to be a little long I think so, Tl;dr at bottom.
I'm currently working the 4-12 tonight at the desk. Alone. At a very popular hotel and convention center. Overall, it's been a good night. Great guests, everyone is happy and polite. There's always gotta be just one problem guest though!
At about 7:15, a lady walks in, mid to late 60's probably. She would like a room for tonight.
Me: Yes I do have rooms! Either a king or 2 queens. The rate tonight without breakfast is $109 plus tax. (Restaurant is closed Thursday/ Friday since we reopened due to layoffs)
Lady: Is that the cheapest rate? What about my mediocre status or old people rate?
Me: The mediocre rate is $104, old people rate would be the cheapest at $99.
Lady: Well what if I use some of my mediocre "doubloons" will that make it cheaper?
Me: In order to use your doubloons you'll have to go through reservations. I can give you the number if you'd like to do that.
Upon further inspection it seems that she's 10,000 doubloons short for a room anyway. So she decides to just pay so she can get more doubloons! Ok we can definitely do that! Before I can get her completely checked in she starts on the price again and im ashamed to admit I cracked and gave her a coupon rate from the online travel guide.
Me: With that coupon it comes to $99.44 After tax.
Lady: That works. Can I get a toothbrush and toothpaste and mouthwash? Well, one of everything you have. Do you have deodorant?
Me: Yes I do. How many toothbrushes did you need? (I admit I immediately regretted asking but I didn't know at this point if her husband was with her or someone else. She got a room with 2 beds)
Lady: 2. Two of everything. Two of each thing you have.
I fill an ice bag full of free stuff for her and send her on her way. I noticed as she's bringing her things in that she's alone.
An hour later, almost to the minute, she comes down with the empty luggage cart and pulls it up to the desk in front of my computer.
Me: Hello again, how is everything so far?
Lady: My room stinks! It smells horrid. It's a moldy, mildew type smell and it's very strong. I don't think I can take it.
Me: Oh no! I'm so sorry about that. I completely understand. Let me get you moved to a different room.
Lady: No, I'm not moving. But it's just so horrible and old smelling.
Me: I can send maintenance up with an odor eliminator to spray around the room.
Lady: No, I don't want anyone in there tonight.
Me: Ok I understand that. I can let you take the bottle with you and use it. You don't have to bring it back tonight.
Lady: No, just make my room cheaper. It stinks and I don't want to do any of that so just give me a discount.
Me: I'm sorry. I personally cannot do that because you already have a discounted rate at the cheapest price we offer. I can move you to a room that doesn't smell bad or let you use the odor eliminator but I'm not authorized to discount a room at that rate when there are solutions available. If you want you can talk to my manager about it in the morning but she'll ask why you weren't open to a solution tonight.
Lady: Ok, where's the restaurant?
I directed her to the restaurant and she left. And left her luggage cart right in front of me blocking the two men who were waiting in line behind her. (The second man in line was nice enough to put it back for her while I worked on the other guests reservation. ) When I got caught up I called over and warned the bartender.
In the restaurant she demanded one of every salad dressing we had, ate 3 servings of free bread and as many packs of crackers as she could get her hands on. She didn't try to get a discount there but she did tell the server that she got her meal for free at lunch today. That this particular restaurant (where she had lunch) doesn't like any complaints and will give her a free meal anytime something isn't right. She also asked for the local chains address so she could get lunch before leaving town again tomorrow.
I've already reported everything to my manager so she's prepared for the complaint first thing in the morning. I seriously doubt she gets anymore of a discount but we'll see how it goes when I get back tomorrow!
Tl;dr: Lady swindles as much as she can out of everyone. Wants more of a discount. Told her to see the manager tomorrow.
Update: When arriving at work today I learn that our lovely guest did in fact complain this morning at check out. She tried to say that she was not given a discounted rate already but given the regular price, that I refused to help her and she wants her room for free because it smelled bad. My FDM told her I offered her several solutions, which she refused, and gave her a discounted rate and we could not discount it anymore. She then demanded my FDM ask the GM. And tell hin how she's traveling alone and needs the discount. He said, the rate stands. This just made her mad.
She has repeatedly called wanting to talk to the GM herself because she does not believe us. He will call her back when he gets here. I say, good luck with that. He already said no and will not change his mind. The room has been checked (by 4 different people) and no odor was detected.
