When I was brand new I experienced A LOT of bullying by guests than I do now. Especially when I was training.
We hired a new part timer last month and she has been training in the back on the computer. Her first week on the floor started three days ago and people have been absolutely brutal to her. She has mostly just been doing her computer training on the desk while spending some time shadowing myself and our supervisors. Yesterday was slow since it was Sunday so it was a perfect day for her to start to try to do check ins on her own with either myself (gsa) or the pm supervisor watching after her from the side.
This one woman was particularly nasty with her yesterday. I am the type of person who does not let my coworkers get bullied so I had to step in and tell the woman about herself in a stern manner. I was not too friendly with her because she was being very rude to the newbie. When newbie greeted her the woman said "SPEAK UP I CAN NOT HEAR YOU!" That rubbed me the wrong way because I am a soft spoken person myself and I HATE when people bully soft spoken people. This new girl is from a foreign country where people are typically soft spoken because it is in their culture. Also we were not busy that day and you could hear a pin drop in the lobby so I know this woman heard her. She just wanted to be a bully. Also as an attractive woman myself I already could tell this woman was using the new girl as a punching bag because she is pretty. This woman clearly has a complex about her self since she was a middle aged Karen.
She CLEARLY saw that we were in training because I was standing to the side of her walking her through everything. Anyways the new girl could not remember how to capture credit cards so I was walking her through it. "UM EXCUSE ME YEAH CAN WE WRAP THIS UP PLEASE?!" exclaimed the guest. I lost it! We literally only had this guest at the desk for a total of one minute and 30 seconds. I told her "Mam I am so sorry and I understand you are in a hurry to get to your room however we are training thank you SO MUCH for your patience.
After that the guest got a little nervous and I can tell she started to maybe feel a little guilty for how she had been interacting with the new girl. she responded "Well why didn't she TELL me she was training from the start?" I told her well she prolly wanted to not have to explain herself sense being new can be very nerve racking as is without the added pressure of having to declare to each guest that they are new? This woman annoyed me when she said that too because it was VERy obvious that she was new and in training since I was standing next to her and instructing her through most of the check in.
