5 or 6 years ago, my wife (then girlfriend) and I decided to try some breakfast at a diner in Winter Park, FL that may or may not be named after said city...
I'll make this as short as possible
Background: I have worked in the service industry for years so I'm not coming at this with the perspective of some self-entitled shit with no basic human compassion. I'm super easy to please and very understanding.
First crime committed: Extremely rude waitress. She hated being there. She hated helping us. She hated every simple question I had about the menu.
Second crime: Outrageously overpriced considering the quality of food. It was a classic case of typical diner food in an upscale area that is upcharged heavily because they know people will pay it. I'm talking $11.99 for 2 eggs and hashbrowns overpriced.
Third crime: The one indication for customers that the place is cash only was a tiny sign on the front counter. I'm sorry, we just didn't see it. Judging by the waitress' immediate frustration with me about it, they must have this problem with lots of people. I don't know guys...maybe put it on the menu and hang a few more signs with bigger font? Or just get a fucking card reader. Either way, I was super cool about it when she snarled at me and barked about an atm that was down the street. My wife sat in the diner (as collateral, I guess) while I drove a few blocks down the street and pulled cash out of the atm.
The Crime of the Century: I get back to the place and pay at the counter. It's pretty obvious that the lady behind the counter and the waitress have been talking about me and and now they are both shooting rude turds at me in every way possible. I couldn't believe how quickly it escalated when the counter lady said nothing to me at all and slammed my change down (this is before I've even had an opportunity to tip, so that wasn't a factor). I was so confused. As my wife and I are walking toward the door, I couldn't stop myself from turning around and saying at least one thing,
"You know, you guys have been extremely rude to us this whole time. Had you been even slightly nicer about any of this, we might've considered coming back (total lie, given the prices). You should really learn about better customer service."
We exit the doors and start getting into our car. The front door flies open behind us and the lady at the counter comes out screaming.
"Well you need to learn how to be better customers!"
Me: "Wow, I'm sure the owner here would love to know that you're chasing customers out of the store to argue with them about dumb things."
Counter Lady: "I AM the owner!"
Me: "Well you should be real proud of yourself."
My poor wife was embarrassed and mortified, sitting in the passenger seat. People inside and outside witnessed the whole thing and I can't imagine what they were thinking. I know restaurant owners are usually known for being insane, but this got out of hand. We left and never went back. If this place is still open, I'd be surprised. If it is, it must be under new management or something.
Edit: I checked and it is still open. They are still cash only.
