Reposted under correct title.

When I was 18, I got a job at [Name Brand Greetings Cards]. It was the first job I'd ever gotten through a simple application and I was happy to have some extra money for the upcoming holidays.

It was fun, and I liked most of my coworkers, but for some reason, the assistant manager (hereby AM) really hated me. My theory is that it's because the store manager kinda went over her head in hiring me (called me in himself and hired me on the spot instead of the normal process of her weeding out the ones she didn't like and him picking from those left). And since I was also going to school full time, I could only work nights and thus almost every shift I worked was with her.

I only worked with NBGC for 3 months, and this lady is THE reason I will never work retail again. I have 3 stories about this woman. This is the first.

I've been working with NBGC for about 3 weeks at this point. It's about 30 minutes from close and it just me and the key holder at this point. I was near the entrance, organizing cards and envelopes, stocking anything we were low on, when this older lady in a wheelchair comes in. Think like 80 year old grandma that looks like a decent breeze would blow her away and had an oxygen tank attach to the back of the chair.

I greeted her and asked if she needed any help, which she declined at first, but I kept my eye on her. About 5 minutes later, I notice her continually trying to get her chair closer to one of the displays of cards, but because of how our shelving was shaped, she couldn't quite reach. I approached and asked if she needed me to get one of the cards for her. She was embarrassed but grateful for the help. I spent the next 45 minutes going around the store with her, helping her pick the perfect card for each individual in her family and cashed her out for a little over $100.

When the old lady left, the keyholes told me that that sale should have put us over our goal for the day by about $30, but it did cost us 15 minutes after close.

The next evening I came into work, the AM pulls me aside and demands I explain my actions about holding up the store. She said we didn't meet our goal that night and that under no circumstance should I ever keep the store open after close. I just agreed because this was my first retail job (previously worked at a skating rink) and I just assumed that's how things worked in this world. I found out later that the woman had called customer service (I don't think she had a computer) and left a compliment about me with them, which is probably the only reason AM didn't write me up.

TLDR: I spent 45 minutes helping a lady in a wheelchair pick out Christmas cards and my assistant manager got mad at me for it.
