Labor Day was strange

Post Body

So I've worked in this retail store for about a year and a half. When I started, I worked in the backroom overnight, but I was recently promoted to Customer Service Manager, basically overseeing the front end and overnight cashiers (all one to two of them, depending on the night).

I had three nights of training for my new job with the other CSM before I had to do it on my own for the first time. My first night on my own happened to be Labor Day, so it was unusually busy for a Monday night. That said, as it got close to midnight, it was dying down like normal.

Around 11:45, I'm standing with the one overnight cashier working that night as we sort through the returns. Two kids walk up and she goes to help them at the register.

A couple minutes later, she calls me over. These two kids can't have been more than nine or ten years old. No parent or anything, just them. They bought two $150 bikes, an iPod and accessories for it, and a few other smaller things. Over $500 of stuff. They paid in cash, all 50s and 100s. Where the hell did two kids get that kind of cash?

I walk away to call management on my walkie, because this is just weird. They tell me to let it go, so I do. Then this happens:

Kid 1: We should do something with all this money. Someone will probably try to rob us or something.

Kid 2: Yeah. We should get one of those cards.

They pick up a prepaid debit card and bring it to the service desk for me to set up. So I start setting up the card.

Me: Okay, and how much did you want on here?

Kid 1 shoves a fistful of cash at me.

Kid 1: Whatever's in here.

It's $400, all 50s and 100s. I finish up the transaction and they leave.

Half an hour later, it turns out they were just hanging out in the parking lot. They come back in, run around for a bit, and leave. Another half hour later, they do it again. I call management again, because this is beyond suspicious by now. They blow us off.

Twenty minutes later, the kids come in again, but this time they buy silly string. Surprise surprise, the silly string ended up all over the front of the store. Management finally manage to haul themselves out of the office and chase them off and call the cops.

I just...what even? Where did all that cash come from? WHERE WERE THEIR PARENTS?

That wasn't even the only thing to happen that night. But this has gone on long enough, so I'll save those for another time.
