The sketchy man and his "offer"
Post Body

Ok this story happened way back in 08 while I was working my only retail job. Keep in mind I was 17 at the time. Also sorry for the text wall.

I worked at a small store in a small town that sold a little bit of everything. I had a few encounters with weird people and such but this definitely took the cake.

It was a slow evening and I was the only cashier at the time, doing my cleaning duties when two older men approach my register. One was maybe late 50s and the other maybe late 30s. I greeted them with a smile and since they didn't have any items in their hands I asked if they needed any help.

Sg (scuzzy guy): "yeah ummm I'm looking for clear plastic playing cards. Do you guys have any?"

I had seen those kinds of cards before in the store so I asked my coworker if he could check quick. Turns out we didn't have any but since the store chain sold them I offered to write up a transfer slip so I could help them.

Me: "I'm sorry sir we don't have any in the store but I can write up a transfer slip and next week they will be in for you."

Sg : "ok darlin let's do that."

As I proceeded to write out the slip I could feel two sets of eyes on me. I felt really uncomfortable with the whole situation so I tried to hurry.

Sg : "you have the most beautiful handwriting! Doesn't she?"

Og (other guy) : "yeah she sure does!"

Note that my handwriting is atrocious. I didn't know what to say so I kept my head down until I asked the guy for a phone number and a name so we could let him know when his cards came in.

I didn't think anything was weird at the time so I maintained a friendly helpful tone.

Me: "ok sir all I need now is a phone number and a name so we can call you when it comes in."

The two guys exchange glances and the older one goes for his wallet. (Also note this whole thing took about 5 minutes and not a soul came around. No customers and no coworkers. I was totally alone!)

Sg: "tell ya what darlin let me give you my card instead." And he pulls a business card out of his wallet and writes a few things on it. "You're too pretty to work here. How does a salary of 50k plus dental and medical insurance sound?"

I.was.flabbergasted. Here I was at a crap retail job and this dude offers me that??? He only knew my first name and what my handwriting looked like! When has that ever been enough qualifications for a job? He didn't tell me what I'd be doing or anything either.

Me: "umm wow that sounds...pretty cool." I had no idea what to say to that! I wasn't even half way through my senior year in high school!!

The scuzzy guy gives me a wink and says "well think about it and if you're interested then give us a call!" And the two walk out, leaving me stunned for a few moments before my brain kicks back on. So I paged my manager.

M: " yeah what do you need? Why aren't you cleaning??"

I handed her the card and explain the whole ordeal to her. I was scared of her but at the same time I knew she didn't take shit off of anyone so I was fairly certain she would have my back.

M: "ok I'll take care of it. You get back to work." Was all she said to me.

The next day I came in she told me she had called the number on the card to see wtf was up. Sorta went like this:

M: "yeah this is [manager] at [store] and I was wondering why you gave this card to my cashier last night"

Sg : "i was only offering her a job! She's too pretty to work in a store like that."

M: "you do realize she's only 17 right..."

Sg : "what??? No I didn't know she wasn't 18!" (A likely story....)

M: "yeah well she isn't. I'd appreciate it if you didn't harass my cashiers and if she sees you in our store again I'll be calling the police." And with that she hung up.

When she told me what happened my jaw just dropped. I couldn't believe something like that happened!! I never found out what kind of "job" it was but I wouldn't have called the guy anyways. I eventually got out of that job before I went to college. Having worked one time in a crappy store with crappy managers who didn't think I could tell the difference between my butt and my elbow ruined the whole retail thing for me.

On the bright side though the store got shut down because the head manager was embezzling money and would constantly berate us on not making sales when we would bust ass just for him.

tl;dr scuzzy guy offers me a job, gets mad I wasn't 18. Manager shuts him down.
