In his real life, Captain Picard was ambitious, always looking foward and, quite literally, aimed for the stars. I always thought it was interesting that he would have be into archeology, which is about looking back.
In Tapestry, Lt. Picard lacked ambition and was probably too grounded for his own good. His work focus was astrophysics, studying the universe from a distance.
Archeology is, quite literally, a "grounded" profession, offering a good balance for a man who wants to explore the universe.
Maybe I'm the last person to realize this. Still seems like a nice little bit of show writing.
