Stupid question, but steps to get a FBI background as an American?

I only ask because I've seen quite a few "FBI channelers" that are prohibited from doing a background check for employment, etc.
I have my TEFL, my BA, a passport, and this seems to be my last hurdle before getting the background check notarized so I can start applying to jobs.
I'm guessing this step was obvious to everyone else but can anyone give me any advice/help? I would greatly appreciate, as I'm eager to teach.
