TW: Child abuse
Hello everyone,
First visit to the sub. I'm looking for some advice on where to start out. I grew up in an extremely abusive household and my mothers starting punishment of choice was slamming our heads into things or beating us over the head with those old phones. Usually we would have to pretend we passed out before she stopped, but i know I had blurry vision, dizziness after, etc. This was all ranging from age 10-17. I'd probably estimate it happened probably 7 to 1`0 times.
I had a lot of emotional issues which I always assumed were solely just coming from an abusive family and years of therapy and stuff has served me well.
In 2018 I got a concussion when I started to get out of a car door while someone else simultaneously decided to throw the door shut. It slammed directly on my temples. I had emotional swings by the minute, couldn't read, and extreme headaches and trouble speaking for awhile after. Doctors sent me to get a CT scan and that was it. "yep its a concussion" was about the summary of it.
To this day my ears still ring when from it when things get stressful or even at random. I also have bouts of light and sound sensitivity.
About a month ago I was in Colorado and slipped on ice, and slipped hard enough the back of my head bounced off the ice and I knew immediately from the feeling it was a concussion.
My therapist was essentially like "why the F@#$ arent you seeing a neurologist, take care of yourself for once". I called the concussion center at my local hospital and described my situation. The doctor called me back and said they couldn't help me because of the severity (in my mind it wasn't severe and I was shocked).
I had an appointment with a neurologist yesterday that went on for hours. They interviewed me about my background, medications, etc. I did a lot of physical tests and they somehow were able to attribute my lack of balance and coordination with being TBI or emotional issues (apparently depression and anxiety and CPTSD can cause imbalance).
At the end of the appointment they put me on medication to relieve headaches, ordered an MRI and said I need to schedule a fully neuropsychological testing battery and said I have TBI from childhood and its only made worse from my recent concussions.
TL;DR: Really bad childhood that caused TBI, finally went to a doc after two concussions as an adult and they said it was bad, now I'm getting an MRI and testing.
questions:
What recommendation does anyone have for someone starting out?
has anyone done a full battery of tests and what tests does it consist of? (MMPI? etc?)
Anyone who's gone through this, what was the outcome? Was there a treatment plan or was it more like "LOL that sucks, here's some meds"
