How important is it for couples to be “professional”?

We’ve noticed that a lot of couples lots themselves as professionals. Is this something that people find attractive? It could just be the area where I’m from, but most people we’ve met are some kind of college graduate professional. I don’t think I’d mind playing with someone who hadn’t graduated from college or didn’t have some sort of white-collar job. Is this a requirement for people? If so, why?
