Pubic Hair Removal vs. STI Prevention

This is the Great Paradox of Swingers. Roughly every 1.5 weeks thereā€™s a post in r/swingers about shaving preferences. Roughly 4 times a week thereā€™s posts about STIs, condoms, and protection.

Weā€™ve conducted pubic hair preference polls in the past and on Reddit, the overwhelming majority prefer shaved/waxed/lasered BARE. Yet from our anecdotal observations (and viewing formal and informal polls on Reddit), the majority of the lifestylish mandates protection for PIV sex, NO exceptions.

Because most STIs regularly tested for are treatable, itā€™s the regular availability of birth control for women that revolutionized bareback sex (not condoms), vaccines are available for HPV and Hep A & B, almost NOBODY uses barriers for oral sex, and transmission of HIV for the predominant age cohort of swingers (late 30s to mid 50s) through PIV is virtually non-existent, we have to surmise the primary motivating factor for using protection for PIV sex in the lifestyle is the prevention of HSV-2 transmission.

The good news about pubic hair removal: Crabs (pubic lice) have all but been eradicated šŸ¦€

Now the bad news about pubic hair removal: if the primary concern for using protection is ostensibly the prevention of contracting genital herpes, condoms are only 30% effective in protecting against HSV; condoms are barriers over only a relatively small coverage area. The mons pubis and buttocks are a LARGE coverage area.

HSV is a skin-to-skin infection; it wasnā€™t even considered an STD until maybe the 1970s. With condoms only being 30% effective (if that) against HSV because of the skin-to-skin nature of transmission and swingersā€™ proclivities towards removing the natural barrier of pubic hair (creating at minimum microabrasions in the process), we in the lifestyle are actually ACCELERATING our risk of HSV transmission:

STDs and Shaving, Waxing or Vajazzling

We are not advocating that swingers stop wearing condoms. Weā€™re also not advocating swingers stop pubic hair removal. Weā€™re just pointing out the hardline stances of no partner who isnā€™t always ā€œbare down thereā€ and always ā€œno glove no loveā€ frequently trumpeted on Reddit are actually working in opposition to each other. We canā€™t maintain our community and the lifestyle through hubris.

TL;DR - With condoms only being 30% effective against genital herpes, even this low level of protection is essentially wiped out by pubic hair removal.
