Can you maintain a good friends relationship when the FWB ends with a couple?

We had a great relationship with the other couple for a couple of years and had a number of play dates with them. But on our last meeting with them, they told us they no longer wanted to play with us but valued our friendship and wanted to remain friends. We understand that things change and are ok with no longer playing. But now we are struggling with how to go forward with the "just friends" aspect.

We don't live close to each other so if we do see each other it would be at national events we both attend. We had made trips to each other's homes for a stay of several days each time. Don't see us doing that in the future. So it seems like "friends" is more like "acquaintances" .

How did you move forward with a couple after no longer being FWB's but only friends?
