First time visitors to Caligula last weekend. Went to the Saturday night couples/single women event. Price at the door was $100. The young lady working the door was very nice. Bartender was great, he explained everything we needed to know.
The first half of the evening was excellent. The club was somewhat empty when we got there but we met a lovely couple and soft swapped in one of the big open rooms. The place got steadily busier over the next several hours, and we ended up swapping with a few other couples as well.
Later in the evening there was a definite vibe shift; a lot of those couples in the big open rooms magically transformed into leering, unaccompanied men. Some of them were handsy. All of them responded to redirection. We were there from around 9:30 to 3, probably four hours in the play area.
THE GOOD:
Staff was friendly and helpful.
Layout is fine. There's a large dance floor w/ stripper pole and bar on the first floor with an outdoor smoking patio. Upstairs are two large open play areas and three private rooms as well as a huge six-person walk-in shower (in the hallway, but still). Never had to wait in line for the restroom.
The place is clean enough.
Crowd was okay, it was a good mix of people of all shapes/sizes/colors. I'd guess the median age at around 45 but there were a solid number of younger couples there as well.
THE BAD
Enforcement of house rules seems a little inconsistent. We went on a Saturday (couples/single women only) but as the night went on there didn't seem to be much policing of unaccompanied men, which is troublesome. There's also purportedly a dress code but they didn't seem to be enforcing that towards the end of the night either. I wouldn't give a shit about that except that I wouldn't have worn dress shoes if I thoguht I could have gotten away with my docs.
This may be a result of lack of volunteers. There was to my observation only one guy working the upstairs play areas and he was busy hustling clean sheets into the rooms. He was keeping up with that pretty well but I feel like a second person would have been really helpful so that single men could be shooed away. TO BE CLEAR, we never felt unsafe but that's beacuse we're good at interpersonal diplomacy. And it wasn't anything we haven't dealt with before at other clubs.
Ambience is nothing fancy, lots of colored lights and pictures of asses on the walls. This is not one of those exclusive members-only joints so don't expect the Eyes Wide Shut treatment.
The music was super fucking loud downstairs.
No nudity on the dance floor, which limits play space a bit and so the upstairs hallways were super crowded.
GOOD/BAD?
Sum total I give this place 4/5 stars. There are things I would do differently but they get points for being accessible for normal people. Most of the clubs in this city are either way too expensive, way too exclusive, or way too permissive; the rest are pay to play or gangbangs (or both). Caligula is probably the only club I've found in the city that doesn't have annoyingly onerous membership restrictions or a sketchy "come join our dubcon mind control harem" vibe (coughhaciendacough). The crowd was ecelctic and 90% respectful, and as long as you keep your eyes open, mind your boundaries and exercise good judgment you'll have a fantastic time. We certainly did, and we'll be coming back (at those prices maybe once a month). If you go, though, try to leave before 2 a.m. unless you want to have a very frank discussion about consent with six drunk men.
