We’ve long held the view that Kik (and other apps) was just a tool to communicate and we used it just for that. One on one or two on two conversations was the extent of our Kik experience. When the threatened Kik shutdown came along in 2019, we moved many conversations off to other platforms. But in general, we like to be easy to communicate with. While we’d prefer other services, we’d jump on Kik to not be difficult for a new couple to communicate with.
After reading this podcast transcript, it might be time to reconsider that stance and take a firm line against using Kik. Since the buyout, the people behind Kik simply slapped ads on it and took a complete hands off approach to the platform. They’ve allowed the worst of human nature to flourish on the platform.
A reconning is likely coming for Kik and I’m not sure I want to be anywhere near it when it does. It’s time we all stop turning a blind eye towards this platform’s worst tendencies even if we’re all just using it to chat amongst ourselves. There’s much better options out there now anyway. We’re working towards moving the last of our conversations that matter off Kik and on to something else. I don’t want the app anywhere near my phone anymore. If people don’t already know it’s reputation, they likely will in the future and the last thing I want is a Kik notification popping up on my watch to give an on looker the wrong impression.
