I'm very, very new to Lindy Hop (took my first lesson on Monday, went to BTP on Saturday and social danced for the first time). I had a really good time, but I want to try my best to break out of the mindset of just picking from a syllabus of patterns I know and instead making the dance flow better. I've been dancing west coast swing for around a year and change and that's something I've been focusing on there - connecting my dance with the music and not just spinning a wheel to see what pattern comes next. Does anyone have any lindy-specific tips, especially for those of us with quite small pattern repertoires, or any tips for looking at patterns not as predefined recipes? (I don't even know if 'patterns' are a concept in Lindy, but they seem to be considering I've been taught "named" moves like sugar pushes, side passes, swing outs, circles etc.).
